In recent years, the term ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance) has evolved from being a sustainability trend to becoming a strategic, reputational, and regulatory requirement.

Today, stakeholders increasingly demand that companies not only behave ethically but also demonstrate it through concrete actions, measurable data, and verifiable policies. In this context, the role of compliance is expanding, and ESG training is emerging as a key component to ensure organizations develop a genuine culture of sustainability and corporate responsibility.

What is ESG, and how is it connected to compliance?

ESG refers to three essential pillars of corporate commitment:

Environmental (E): Environmental impact, climate change, waste management, energy efficiency.

Social (S): Human rights, working conditions, diversity and inclusion, community impact.

Governance (G): Corporate ethics, anti-corruption efforts, transparency, governance structure.

While compliance has traditionally focused on the “G” (Governance), it is now called to broaden its scope and integrate ESG factors into training strategies and awareness programs.

Why integrate ESG training within compliance?

1. Compliance with new regulations

• The European CSRD Directive requires many companies to report not only financial metrics but also sustainability indicators.

• Due diligence laws obligate companies to assess and mitigate ESG risks within their supply chains.

2. Prevention of reputational and legal risks:  Cases of greenwashing, workplace harassment, lack of transparency, or discrimination are no longer mere scandals — they can lead to sanctions, fines, and loss of operating licenses.

3. Investor and consumer demands:  The market increasingly favors sustainable companies, and many investment funds now require ESG criteria as a condition for investment.

4. Internal cultural transformation:  ESG training aligns values, purpose, and behavior, creating more ethical, consistent, and engaged organizations.

Recommended formats for ESG training in compliance programs

Thematic microlearning: Short modules on diversity, recycling, inclusion, anti-corruption, etc.

Interactive webinars or workshops: Real-life case studies and ethical discussions.

Impact assessments: Surveys to measure knowledge and commitment levels.

Awareness campaigns: Coordinated around key dates or global initiatives.

Today, compliance is no longer just a legal obligation — it encompasses ethical, environmental, and social dimensions. Integrating ESG training into compliance programs is not only a response to growing demands but also an opportunity to build a more conscious, consistent, and future-ready organization.

At Simor Global, we help companies design and implement comprehensive compliance programs. Does your organization have one in place?
